Introduction to Night Sky Photography
With Wayne Hicks and Wayne Brasure
December 6 - 9, 2026
Capture the cosmos under the dark skies and secluded landscapes of the painted desert of Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. Stay in Casa Del Sol, a private facility reserved exclusively for course participants and located near the iconic Puerto de Cielo (“Gateway to Heaven”) formation—the perfect setting for an immersive night-sky photography experience. Designed primarily for those new to night-sky photography, this course begins with the simplest tool you have: your smartphone. From there, instruction will introduce the fundamentals of nighttime photography with a digital camera, giving participants the opportunity to build confidence and explore new techniques at their own pace. For those interested in looking deeper into the cosmos, telescopes will be available for viewing or basic astrophotography. Class instruction will be on-site during the afternoons, with our night time photography sessions running from dusk until dawn. The mornings are free for rest, or exploring the magnificent landscape of Ghost Ranch. Attendees may bring their own cameras, tripods, smartphones, etc., however, those who attend without any equipment will have the necessary tools for observing and photography made available during the course. Please keep in mind that ideal weather conditions are never guaranteed but “hands on” instruction will be given regardless of any adverse weather. Additional details will be provided when class registration is completed.
