Geology of New Mexico Landscapes
With Albert Shultz and Peter Barkmann,
August 24 - 29, 2026
This workshop invites participants to explore the origins of iconic landscapes of Northern New Mexico, through geologic observation and interpretation during four field days plus arrival and departure days. Inside colorful strata and sparkling crystals are stories of change – the natural processes that have assembled the land itself. Besides looking at the geology of Ghost Ranch in detail, we will visit the edge of the Rio Grande Rift near Abiquiu, as well as venturing east to the ancient rocks underlying the Tusas Mountains, and southwest through the Jemez volcanic field near Los Alamos.
Dress for the outdoors, and be prepared for some easy to moderate hiking on our four field days. We will spend one night in Jemez Springs, but otherwise will return to Ghost Ranch for dinner each day.
